I have had many requests for basic videos about color, drawing,
perspective, painting techniques, etc. Many painters gain a great
proficiency in handling the brush and paint, but miss the building
blocks that the concept of painting rests upon. Because so many
begin as hobbyists, whose only goal is to produce a single finished
piece, this situation is understandable. Once the painting bug bites
us, though, we soon recognize that our progress is limited without
an understanding of these basics.
This new series of videos is designed to provide you with the basic
information that you may have skipped in the rush to finish a complete
piece. Each video addresses an area that must be mastered so that
truly original work can be performed. Classes in these subjects
are hard to find, and harder to fill with interested students. Invariably,
when you decide you need them, they are no longer offered unless
you have the good luck to live near an art school. And then, you
generally have to sign up for an extended time, a semester, to enroll.
Few have the time.
We have planned six to eight videos in the Illuminations!
series. The first video in the series, "Understanding Color", explains
basic color relationships that will free you from brand-specific,
tubed color mixtures forever. You will know simply by observation
what a color is by its generic definition, or what colors are necessary
to mix it. Instructions will be included that will show you how
to mix any color you desire. You will never again have to buy browns,
greens, or other earth colors.
Also included will be study exercises that, if performed, will make
you color-savvy, and provide you with an invaluable color reference
that you can use for the remainder of your painting career.
With 10-12 basic colors, available in any brand, you can mix virtually
any color you wish. If you are serious about your painting, this
class is a required subject, not an option. It's only a matter of
time before you must have the knowledge it contains for you. For
teachers, this video will provide a succinct presentation for your
own classes.
Painting and music have great similarities. The colors on your palette
are like the keys of the piano. Without a thorough understanding
of those color/keys and how to use them, how can one make paintings/music?
Understanding is not enough. Just knowing how to read music does
not make one able to play the piano; just reading about color does
not make one proficient in its use. It must be practiced!!! The
individual must do it by hand. It must be learned like music scales,
to the point it becomes second nature to you and you never have
to think about it consciously.
Commercially printed color wheels are pretty to look at, but not
really very useful to the painter. It simply cannot contain everything
you need to know. The color wheel must exist in the painter's mind,
not on paper. And the only way to put it in the mind is to through
the hands. Join me in this exercise and you will learn more about
color than you thought possible. Yes, there's that dastardly word
"exercise". It crops up in every aspect of our lives. To perform
well, we must exercise our minds, our hands, our bodies, and our
craft. Consider it a gift to yourself.
This educational series of painting basics for the developing painter
are available individually for $65.00 each or at a 20% discount
for the purchase of 4 or more at the same time.
NOTE: We offer most videos in either VHS or DVD formats.
The VHS videos are available in U.S. broadcast standard NTSC format
