French
Countryside
The nearest sizable town
is Cahors, in the Lot District, of southern France. Our hotel is located in the
countryside roughly halfway between Toulouse and Bordeaux. The terrain is
hilly, with high rolling plains, deep gorges and narrow valleys, all of which
offer endless painting opportunities. We will fly into and out of Toulouse, and
visit several historic towns in the region.
Outdoor
Painting
Instruction will be
offered in the morning and evening sessions, to give painters maximum time to
paint during the daylight hours. We will split our time painting on the grounds
of Haut Baran and offsite in nearby locations. A studio is available for
inclement weather.
Morning Session:
Morning Sessions will consist of students selecting compositions to paint, and the instructor will circulate among painters to offer individual instruction and answer questions.
Afternoon Session:
Afternoon Sessions are for independent painting. During these times, you will have a chance to review, and put into practice what you learn in the morning sessions.
Critiques
Critiques will be held twice per week or as scheduled by the instructors.
Landscape Painting Techniques
Students may work in the mediums of oil, alkyd, or acrylics. Demonstrations will be done in oils. Lectures and demonstrations will be tailored to instruct the basics of painting, including perspective drawing, composition, value and color theory, and plein-aire painting techniques. Emphasis will be on how to paint and sketch on location, so that you may have all the information you need to create or complete a more ambitious painting back in the studio. Demonstrations will be done in oils.
Painters may choose to do many small studies, or concentrate on more ambitious projects that take several days. Painting sites will also include local farms, rolling pastures, hamlets, villages and castles. Subject matter abounds at every turn.
Charming
Accommodations
We have reserved for our
exclusive use the beautifully restored chateau, Domaine du Haut Baran, where we
will paint and enjoy all the region has to offer. Beautifully landscaped with
fountains, gardens, rolling pastures and lush floral plantings, this private
hotel, with surrounding grounds and winding country lane, is a painters
dream. Located in the heart of a wine-growing region, we will also see the Lot
River nearby.
Haut Baran offers the
amenities one would expect in a 4-star hotel. There are seven premium bedrooms
available that offer everything the American traveler has come to enjoy in a
luxury accommodation. All of the tastefully decorated rooms either open
directly onto the beautiful, main terrace through French doors or overlook the
terrace from the second floor, with a stunning view of the rolling hills and
valley below. The price of the workshop includes twin-sharing accommodation in
one of these luxury rooms.
Minutes away are charming villages which we will visit for painting, shopping and a few dinner meals. We'll enjoy regional specialities such as foie gras, confit d'oie, canard and delicious, vine-ripened fruit. Not far away are Cirq Lapopie, named the most beautiful medieval village in France, and the famous cave dwellings with paintings by prehistoric man.
Small Exclusive
Classes
The level of service and
limited number of rooms at Haut Baran will necessarily limit the size of the
class. We expect the class size to be about 1215 participants,
guaranteeing plenty of individual attention by the instructor to
all.
