    SCHOOL OF CLASSICAL OIL PAINTING

2008 CLASS SCHEDULE

2009 CLASS SCHEDULE

Total immersion is the method of study the Liliedahl School of Classical Oil Painting offers the adult student of painting. It is the quickest way to learn the basic structure of a new language, science or art. Many who try oil painting as a leisure activity find that it presents incredible challenges to those who seek excellence. Yet there are few institutions that offer good academic training in a compressed time frame, suited to the busy schedule of today's adult student.

The School of Classical Oil Painting was designed specifically to lay the foundation of traditional oil painting principles in intense short courses which can be attended in compact, information-loaded, week-long sessions for however many weeks a personal schedule will allow.

The recommended flow of study is to begin with Color Theory, Composition and Design and then progress on to other subject matter. However, students who choose to study a single area of interest are not required to take other subject courses. Originally designed as only a six-week program, the annual schedule now covers several periods through the year, in response to requests by those who wish to continue their studies more in-depth, and on a more flexible schedule. Students who complete all the programs offered will have a superior foundation in traditional oil painting methods and concepts for any painting subject they wish to pursue. PROGRAM GOALS:
The series of workshops offered in this program is designed to train a new generation of painters in the academic theories, methods and techniques of traditional, representational, realistic oil painting. It provides a nucleus of technical skill, along with practical application and the practice of oil painting procedures that have been handed down from the Old Masters to the present. From this solid foundation, painters may go on to pursue more non-representational, imaginary, or expressionistic works on their own.

Each workshop introduces the painter to new subject matter with attendant idiosyncrisies unique to its nature. While the entire program is required to achieve a comprehensive study of painting, each workshop is self-contained and may be attended in any order, allowing flexible scheduling by the individual. Students do not have to take the classes in sequence and may benefit from any single week of study, especially if they have an interest in only one area of subject matter.

WORKSHOP CONTENT and RESOURCES:
While the individual subjects of still-life, landscape and portrait are studied separately, the workshops are not arranged in any particular order. Only the first one—Color Theory, Design & Composition—is recommended (but not required) as a prerequisite to all the others. Two workshops are devoted to specific Old Master techniques.

Refer to the class descriptions for detailed description of individual workshops. Each class will present material to the student in the form of lecture, predetermined exercises, and painting assignments — designed to teach certain skills and illustrate methods and techniques quickly. Reference materials will be available for each session, and will vary in length and content.

Students may attend any session more than once, since each year will offer different exercises and subject matter within each category. For those painters who wish to keep their skills honed, and review methods for which they are out of practice, annual attendance to any of the classes will be beneficial and is recommended. While basic theories will be reiterated, returning students will be challenged anew with assignments appropriate to their level of study. More advanced students will be given more advanced problems to solve in painting.

CERTIFICATE of COMPLETION:
Upon completion of each workshop, the student will receive a Certificate of Completion in that area of study. When all six Core Program Workshops have been completed, a Certificate of Graduation will be awarded in the Study of Traditional Oil Painting. This will entitle the student to attend the Mentoring Workshops and enter the Teacher Certification Program.

While Liliedahl Fine Art Studio is not an accredited institution to award college credits, some of our students have been able to present the results of their studies in these workshops to professors in their current college classes and receive partial credit for their efforts as independent study.

SUPPLIES:
Supply Lists for paint and brushes will be mailed to you upon payment of the balance of tuition. All solvent and solvent containers are supplied by the studio so we can assure the solvent is odor-free. Professional easels, taborets, and glass palettes are provided for all workshops by the studio. Still Life setup boxes and spotlights are provided for each student, individually.

All of the painting surfaces used in class must be purchased from our studio. Sales of canvas and other art supplies enable us to provide you with the convenience of easels, taborets, solvent, still-life props and spotlights, setup boxes, television monitors, complementary coffee, tea and snacks--none of which are funded by tuition fees. We are proud of our facility and know that you will enjoy all that the studio has to offer. Help us keep it operating for your benefit, and for that of all future students, by giving us your patronage for discretionary purchases of your other art supplies.

ACCOMODATIONS/TRANSPORTATION:
There are several motels within one mile of the studio that we recommend for short stays ($40-85/night). While the studio is within walking distance of several of the motels (1/2 mile), a rental car is highly recommended for meals. An information package will be sent with other hotels/B&B choices for those with ground transportation. Flights into Hobby Airport (HOU) are most convenient to our studio (30-35 minutes away). Bush International Airport (IAH) is approximately one hour from the studio. Taxi service is available to/from both airports to your hotel.

You will receive additional accommodation information when you pay the balance due for the 1st class, or upon request prior to that.
